For me, this photo sums up Priddy Folk Festival:

It makes all the hard work totally worth the effort when so many people have a great time and the village coffers end up getting topped up too!

Seriously though.........

Technical Details

34SP

Since Dec 2003, the Priddy Folk Festival website has been hosted by 34SP. Their technical support has been excellent, there have been no significant service outages, and their rates are very reasonable. They are highly recommended!

Over the years 34SP have made more and more features available such as Spam filtering, subdomains, PHP, Perl, Python, Ruby and MySQL. They have also provided scripts for installing great chunks of advanced functionality including eCommerce, Blogs, Wikis and Photo Galleries. One of the scripts installs a Wiki engine called MoinMoin, which this website uses extensively.

MoinMoin

In the 'bad old days', the website was looked after by a Webmaster who wrote the pages using hand-crafted HTML. Not only was this was a skilled job, but it required a master copy of the website to be held on the Webmaster's computer effectively preventing anyone else from helping. The effort required to single-handedly look after a website the size and complexity of this one is often under estimated!

MoinMoin is a completely different way of looking after a website. The Webmaster shapes the website, then the website content is maintained by nominated groups of people. Priddy Folk Festival has a core team of festival organisers who can update anything on the website, these are the TrustedGroup. The TrustedGroup can also nominate other people to look after sub-sections of the website; for example the ClubTent pages are looked after by the ClubTent organiser.

The TrustedGroup would have to try quite hard to lock themselves out of a page, but it is possible! If this happens, then there is an AdminGroup who are trusted and know what they are doing!!! AdminGroup members always have access, just in case......

If you want to have a 'play' before editing a real page, please use the WikiSandBox. The editor syntax is available at HelpOnEditing.

If you have more questions, please look at the HelpContents. It is very comprehensive!!!!!

JAlbum

The Photo Galleries are done differently to the rest of the website. We use JAlbum which is a free bit of software that allows galleries to be created and uploaded to a website.

If lots of people wanted to upload galleries then we might consider changing to hosted gallery software such as Coppermine. But while the festival gallery is being provided by a single person there is no reason to change; JAlbum is painless to use and the results are really good!
